Seems to me there's more to playing like Steve Harris than just figuring out the notes. He does have fast fingers, but it's his aggressive technique makes his playing seem faster than it really is.

Are you familiar with "galloping"? That is a big part of his right-hand technique. Lots of triplets. He is also a very percussive player, really hitting the strings hard. That's how he gets that bright metallic clanky sound from flatwound strings.

Practice on one string at a time, doing scales up and down the neck with your left hand while working on the triplet gallop with your right. Start slowly and use a metronome, building up speed as you gain accuracy.

Spend 15 minutes working on technique and scales together as your warm up, then work on the ear training stuff.

blackdiamond13,

thats good advice from Vic, I also as a part of my practice routine fire up media play or iTunes and play along to songs. It helps not only with your timing but also with figuring out what kind of progressions work. I tend to play my bass through my PC at the same time and use headphones so the rest of the family dont have to listen. The advantage of doing this way is that you become totaly immersed in the music and find your bass playing improves just by the fact that you are free from any distraction. When we have a gig comming up I get my music partner to record his stuff on an mp3 and do the same. Of course Davids book is also worth reading, Ive read it twice now and get something new out of it each time.

cheers

Paul

Of course, David Hodge's book - The Complete Idiot's Guide To Playing Bass Guitar - will obviously be highly recommended around these parts as well.

Another option is to use your ears - next time you're putting an Iron Maiden CD on, lower the treble, crank up the bass and listen to what SH is doing. Then try and replicate what he's doing - break it down into small pieces and try to master one section at a time.

My practise routine for the bass usually involves putting my Windows Media playlist on random and playing - or trying to play! - along with whatever comes on. Even if I'm not playing note-for-note the same as the bass player, it's a big help with timing etc.

:D :D :D

Vic
