This might just be an Australian thing, but has anyone heard of Ashton basses?  My bass is an Ashton that sells for about A$300 (US$150) and it's reall nice to play, it doesn't sound bad either.  It's got on split single-coil pickup with one volume and one tone knob.

I didn't have much to spend, but today I found a second hand Encore bass.

Its A short scale, and not a brilliant instrument, but Its better than nothin! But you're correct, the Yamaha is a good low priced bass.  I saw some extremely cheap starter kits at Sam Ash before Christmas.

Check out the Yamaha RBX line -- they start at less than US$200.

I've got an RBX-260 from a few years ago.  It's got a single P-style pickup and sounds pretty good when somebody who knows what he's doing with it plays it. (Yes, Dan, I'm thinking of Roy playing Sympathy for the Devil in Chicago  8)).

Yamaha's replacement for the RBX-260, known as the RBX-170, has a J-style pickup in addition to the P-style for added flexibility.  More info here:
