From almost the same position,I can either have my elbow sticking up if I have some tension in my shoulder, or completely comfortable if I let go of all the tension in my shoulder and just let the bass take the weight of the foream. Or to put it another way, let your elbow come towards your body..good luck.

I just got a bass a couple of weeks back, and although it seemed strange to use the index and middle fingers first, it started feeling pretty reasonable after couple of days. Since the strings feel very different because of the size, it is quite a different action from what you do with picking the strings on a guitar. If you know someone who plays bass, I think if they show you how to do it and how to rest your forearm, you will pick it up in no time. When I tried to do it based on a written description, it just didn't work, but I did one bass lesson with my guitar teacher where he showed me how to rest my arm and how to the picking stroke works, and that helped a lot..anway, I would suggest trying the two finger approach because once you start with the thumb, you may end up kind of sticking to it. Easier to learn right than to unlearn and all that kind of stuff...

Hey, thanks for mention of 'Bassin' the Blues'!

Anyhow, this past weekend I had nothing better to do so I took out my Essex 5-string and was playing it unplugged. But then I remembered that years ago I'd promised myself to adjust the neck relief. It was pretty good as-is, but just a bit harder to play than my other basses. So I got the wrench out, loosened the strings, took the cover plate off and gave it a quarter turn.

What a difference!

I'd never gotten around to it because I'd gotten it, changed strings, used it on a few tracks and then got into my Beatle bass more than anything. Now it's really fun to play - to the point where my picking fingertips feel a little bruised ;)

Anyhow, nice bass Kalle - have fun with it. It's great to play both bass and guitar because you start to get an intuitive feeling for how the two work together in songs.

Best regards.
