Hehe, I have absolutely NO IDEA who Jean-Jacques is, but you described the sound so well, I might as well have!

But to get back to gauges, a small change in string diameter, towards the thicker, might not produce that sound all by itself. For me at least, I'd use the thinner gauges for comfort in playing, and then tweak the rest of the rig.

And then maybe get a portable well

Different manufacturers name their sets a little differently from one another, but sets that have .045 as the first string, the G string, have become sort of the 'default' set. Some are called 'light' or 'regular' but it looks like that's the gauge range .045-.105 (or .106 or .108) they usually put on basses when they ship them.

A 'lighter' gauge set would be the .040s, and the 'heavier' sets would be .050. There's variations of course, as far as what the gauge of the 2nd, 3rd and 4th strings are, but basically any set that starts with .045 is the middle ground nowadays, and that's most likely what shipped on the bass originally.

I guess you could get a caliper or a wire-gauge from the hardware store, but it'll probably show .045 as the G string.

I used to use .045 sets (D'Addario, Rotosound) but I like the lighter feel of the 'lighter' sets starting at .040 - like the Rotos I use now.

I figure, why put myself through the added stress, lol.

I buy my guitar strings for about US$7 but bass strings cost five times that. (At least I think that's the price I noticed on them). I know some folks who only change them about once a year.

Gauge? No idea. I'd have someone measure what's on there and replace them with the same gauge. That's what I plan to do on my bass in about 11 months  .
