Just for clarity, "session playing" is usually considered studio work for hire. "Jamming" usually means playing informally with a variety of people, friends or strangers.

If you are fairly quick-thinking, you can have a lot of fun with a minimum set of playing tools. Obviously, you need to know where all the notes are. It's also good to know some simple patterns for blues and other I-IV-V songs, and their cousins. You should know basic Box transitions and blues walks. The Bass Lesson section here has a few suggestions.

It's also good to know a couple of songs with signature bass riffs. That way, you can ask "Hey do you guys know this?" and play a song you're more comfortable with.

If you know some theory, it helps you know what chord is likely to follow, and which transistion notes will be best (eg minor vs major 3rds).

If you have a chance, learn how to read the fretting hand of a rhythm guitarist. If you can read most folk chords and the standard barre chords, you'll find it a lot easier to jump into a song you don't know.

Other than that, keep it simple, listen to the other musicians, and have fun!

-Laz

Or is that too hard for session playing?
