I've been going from D to D6 then to D7, helps me get my fingers lined up a bit and makes it sound more like I'm sliding into the D7 (my memory of this song). Also I like to start off the chorus with the signature riff: slide from high B (high E string, 7th fret) to A (5th fret) i.e. ('four - strong ...'), then hit the G chord for 'winds' just to mix it up a bit, so I know where I am in the song (and presumably any listeners too). Just don't ask me to play AND sing!

Seven Seas That Run High

All These Things That Don't Change Come What May
       G C
But My Good Times Are All Gone

And I'm Bound For Movin' On

     G C
If I Get There Before The Snow Flies

And Things Are Goin' Good
          C Am D D7
You Could Join Me If I Send You Down The Fare
           G C D7 G
But If You Wait Until It's Winter It Would Do No Good
        C Am D D7
For The Winds Sure Can Blow Cold Way Out There
