mattguitar - excellent lesson. I have not been playing guitar, long but when my wife recognises the song after the 4 notes of the intro (yes really!), I know I have to learn it. Sometimes, when practising something for the first time (badly) it can sound like a cat having it's throat cut (I imagine!). As a beginner, any recognition of a song when I am learning it, is a boost to me. Was it like that for all of you?

This James Blunt classic was so successful over here in the UK that most people are fed up with hearing it, and it has become almost un-cool to like it. But as with a lot of songs I revisit to learn on guitar, the song has so much more than I first heard - do others find this?

The song played with capo on 8, sounds so much like the original, but as others have commented, the strumming pattern can be varied to personalise it. I feel that capo on 8 (or 7 as in the GN lesson for Fields of Gold, and 6 for Losing My religion) gives a whole new sound to my guitar.

I cannot sing, have many of you had a stab at singing this song? JB has a very distinctive voice which I think is the beauty of this song.

I will just have to be content with learning to play it as my singing is appalling.

Thanks again mattguitar.

Hi, seeing that there are some request regarding strummin pattern of this song I just wish to add my 2 cents for what they're worth. I listened to the song on the radio and even if I have not tried it on the guitar (by the way I do not have either the capo or the recording of the song), what is clear is that the song involves a lot of sixteen notes, so it can be played with patterns based on sixteen notes like

dd /ddu /dd /ddu (for each measure, every beat is divided by a slash)

by a quick listening I guess there is a bit of syncopation too in the seocnd half of the measure, so the song should work better with a pattern like

dd/ddu/ud/ddu

or

dd/ddu/uu/dudu

In any case until you play it steady at the right speed and change the chords properly the song should be highly recognizable by everyone

Cheers to everyone and and big hello to Matt for the always oustanding work: I promise you that I will definitely buy a capo and try some of the numbers you posted 'cause your lessons are so informative that would be a pity not to use them!

Well, the wife bought the album today and insisted it be played in the car on the way home from work. So in goes the CD and around comes "You're Beautiful". At which point the wife says, "You can play that can't you? It's easy enough isn't it?". To which I reply, "Err ... yes, dear." :P

So after listening to this song a bit more (have heard it quite a bit on the telly prior but not really given it any attention) I find myself drawn to it and compelled to learn it. Thankfully a search revealed that the one and only mattguitar had a lesson on it!

So I just wanna say THANKS Matt! You're doing an awesome job with these lessons! I certainly hope you can continue to find the time, energy and motivation to continue providing these lessons! 8)

As for the song itself, I've just started it tonight but I can already recognise the tune. Of course, my ring finger and pinky are copping a hiding, but I reckon they've been in need of one anyway. :P

Surprisingly too, I'm managing to fit my ring finger and pinky into that 11th fret ... somehow. The main chord I have problems with atm is actually the Em7. Trying to get my middle and index fingers into the 10th fret is proving to be a challenge.

Anyhoo, am going to continue with it as I'm sure it'll fall into place.

Many thanks again Matt! :)
