Heres one that sounds great on acoustic. I'm not sure this strum is exact but it's what I came up with after listening to the song and it sounds like the song. The guitar cuts out on the 2 of measure 2. You don't have to play the muted strums, but if you aren't playing with a drummer it helps keep the rhythm going and helps with your timing, plus at various times it sounds like mellencamp is playing muted strums. Just lay your fingers across the strings and play (up down up down up) right after the last downstrum on the G. On beat two in the first measure you could lift you fingers off the A and play the top few strings. Put your fingers back on quickly to play the next upstrum on the “and” of beat two. The change to the G come on the “and” of beat 4.

Intro and verse strum

A (lift) G
1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and

D U D U U D U U D X X X X X

For the prechorus part on the E, play 4 measures of E. You could just strum Dudu udu, or d d dudud or use whatever 8th note pattern you wish.

The chorus sounds something like this to me:

A G D
1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and
D D D U D U D D U D D u

Enjoy!

Intro

G A

A G/A
Well, some people ain't no damn good.

	      A G/A
You can trust `em, you can't love `em. No good deed goes unpunished.

       A G/A
And I don't mind being their whippin' boy.

      A G/A
I've had that pleasure for years and years

	   A G/A
No, no, I never was a sinner. Tell me, what else can I do?

	A G/A
Second best is what you get `till you learn to bend the rules

     A G/A
And time respects no person and what you lift up must fall

       A G/A
There waitin' outside to claim my crumblin' walls.

	   E
Saw my picture in the paper, read the news around my face.

And now some people don't want to treat me the same.

> CHORUS:

		A G D
When the walls    come tumblin' down;

           A G D
When the walls   come crumblin', crumblin';

	     A G D A
When the walls come tumblin', tumblin' down.

> Repeat Intro

> VERSE II: (same as verse 1)

Well some people say I'm obnoxious and lazy,
I'm uneducated, my opinion means nothin'.
But I know I'm a real good dancer.
Don't need to look over my shoulder to see what I'm after.
Everybody's got their problems. Ain't no new news here.
I'm the same old trouble you've been havin' for years.
Don't confuse the problem with the issue, girl. It's perfectly clear.
Just a human desire to have you come near.

    E
Want to put my arms around you, feel your breath in my ear.
You can bend me, you can break me but you better stand clear.

Chorus.
