This is a tried and true technique employed by lots of rhythm guitarists, not to mention lead guitarists and bassists as well. It creates the illusion that the song is going faster than it is and the use of anticipation propels a lot of rock songs.

As I mentioned, I don't know if it's in the original (or whatever version you happen to be listening to) or not, but it is certainly acceptable to play it that way. It often helps to make it sound better.

But, if you're singing along with the music, playing anticipations can sometimes throw you off. It might take a little practice before one gets comfortable playing and singing at the same time.

A------D---Em----D- I could use some help with this song. I can get the strum pattern above ok, but when I listen the song, it sounds like the strum pattern switches up during the verses. Here is a video:

It sounds like the strumming pattern switches at 0:17 "A fine little girl, she wait for me", and stays that way until the next chorus at 0:32. After the chorus, it switches again at 0:48 for the verse "Three nights and days we sailed the sea", and one more time after the solo at 1:50. At least I think, I think the pattern changes. Maybe the drums and base are throwing me off. The pattern looks and sounds like this to me:
|D--U|D--U|DUDU|---U| |A---|D---|Em-D|----| Well, not quite. The first two bars sound close, but I'm not as confident in the last two. When I play it this way, it sounds like I have too much stuff going on in the third measure, and maybe not enough in the fourth.

<edit> After watching the video some more, I think there is definitely a lot more stuff going on in the last measure, but simply adding the middle up strum and the last down strum sounds kind of cool, and it adds balance to the three Em notes.
