Starting with just piano, Dec singing. then in come the drums just tick tacking away, then the visual of the girls swaying to and fro. then that terrific little reggae style riff from the guitar giving the song a sort of swing feel and then all hell breaks loose as the song comes to a climax with the whole band playing and singing in unison. Its not just the song that does it for me here, its the whole visual aspect that "Alan Parker" the director of the film gets across.

Like Rodders said, amazing to thing that Andrew Strong was only 16 when he sang in that film - I thought he'd have a huge career. Like Steve Winwood was only 15 when he did "Gimme Some Lovin'" with the Spencer Davis Group - and Jimmy McCullough (talented guitarist, died too young) was only 14 when he played guitar on "Something In The Air" by Thunderclap Newman.

I'm a big fan of Dann Penn, the guy who wrote it (he also wrote Do Right Woman, Do Right Man; another fave).
Penn does a stunning version of 'Dark End' with Spooner Oldham on an album called 'Moments From This Theatre'.
