Mark P if you are a genuine beginner you will struggle with the version tabbed, like i did!!!!! This song is a great song to learn for a beginner but you will find it simpler if you slap a capo on the second fret and play it in Am.

So ...

chords used become
am x02210
am9 x02000
dm7 xx0211
dm7b5 xx0111 (Note i will call this "D*" for simplicity!)

Do not be put off by these chords, they really are easy. Form an Am shape, to get to Am9 just take two of your fingers off and leave the fretted D string at 2nd fret. The other chords are equally simple, for the last one just bar the highest three strings at 1st fret.
The most important thing to practice with this is the bass - strum type style and partial chord playing, ie don't just bash away at all six strings.

Suggest you play

Pluck bass note, Down strum once, bass note, down strum, bass note down up down up, and then repeat. Once you have this pattern off pat you can vary it a little bit, a good trick is to play the dm7b5 as a single down strum and then pick upwards the individual notes.

Note that this is in 4/4 time, i.e 4 beats to a bar, i have indicated in parenthesis ( ) how many beats each chord is. This is very important!!! For the intro, play open D string, hammer on at 2nd fret, then play G string fretted at 2nd fret, then open A string as your first bass note, if that makes sense?

Here you go try this -

Intro into...

Am (4) Am9 (4)
High tide, mid afternoon
Dm7 (2) D* (2)
People fly by
Am (4)
And the traffic booms
Am (4) Am9 (4)
Going, just where you're blowing
Dm7 (2) D* (2)
Getting to where
Am (4)
You should be going

This cycle then repeats through the song. Try playing along to a metronome set on a steady beat, until you can play it without one.

I hope this helps. I also have a simple solo that's easy to play and you can get away with, if anyone is interested i will post it seperately.

Cheers and keep playing....

Matt
