Agree. Overdrive pedals such as the Voodoo Lab Sparkle Drive I have (another take on TS) create that loose distortion by overdriving the amp input stages. This is a very organic, touch sensitive break-up crunch that is only lightly compressed. The tighter and more compressed metal distortions are going to be created in two completely different places: In a distortion pedal itself and/or in the "playing-it-loud" heavily saturated amp output (power) stage. And even for those, the exact sonic nature of either depends very much on the respective pedal and/or amp design.

I have a Peavey Valveking 112 and no effects. I'm still learning how to play (Christmas Eve will be two months) so I'm just starting to learn some stuff that I can use anything but the clean channel. I think I want to get a pedal for harder rock all of the way to black metal. THe amp can take care of most up until about Iron Man distortion. One pedal that I'm looking at is the Boss Metal Zone. When you use a pedal what do you set the amp on? Do you just switch everything to 0 and use the knobs on the pedal or what? Also when using an EQ pedal do you just set it so that it gives you the right sund and leave it at that setting, or is there a way that it correlates to the setting on the pedal/amp? Thanks.

P.S. whoohoo I'm going to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for the first time even thought I live in Cleveland. It shoud be awesome!
