He's right and wrong.

If it doesn't sound good played clean, it won't sound good no matter what pedals you use, so the standard teacher response to students asking about effects is "don't use any!"

But, effects are a lot of fun, and one of the best reasons for a tube amp, in my view, is that you have a great clean sound so you can actually hear what the effects do and play with them.

Back to topic:

I'd vote eq, wah, volume pedal, tubescreamer, chorus/delay, compression.

Yes, it's more than 4 pedals, but in my mind only 4 effects. EQ and Volume are foot controls, and not really effects in my mind.

I think you got the order backwards. I would go Wah first, Tubescreamer, and then EQ. Of course nothing is written in stone, and putting effects in a particular order can give you an individual sound. But there are reasons for putting effects in a certain order. Here is a great and very informative site on effects order you might enjoy. Lots of great info at this site.

http://users.chariot.net.au/~gmarts/fx-order.htm

Another pedal you might consider is Compression. I have never been a big fan of compression, but recently we had some posts on the subject and I did a lot of searches and found videos and audios on compression and really liked the way a compressor added warmth to a guitar's clean tone. I had been doing this by using an overdrive pedal with the gain turned all the way down already. But I really liked the presence and warmth it gave to the tone. So what the heck, I ordered one of the Behringer CS100 compressors for $20. And wow, I really love this little pedal. It does take away some dynamics, but it adds lots of warmth and sustain too. Not a bad little pedal to put in your chain.
