Just a quick update. The G2 series include the "fine tune" way for the settings for almost all the effects. For chorus, for example, now you have depth, rate and mix, even the rate can be adjusted in real time by means of the pedal.

I think the acoustic guitar simulator which is considered as a "modeler", it is in the "amps modelers/distortion" module, is the one that keeps the "old" way. Its parameters represent acoustic guitar types.

The G2 has also a site with patches: http://zoom.haax.se/

I have the old Zoom 505 MKII and Zoom GFX-1 which came out just before these models.

My opinion of Zoom is this: Their distortions are BETTER than Digitech, Line 6, or Boss, but their effects are WORSE.

If you like great sounding overdrives or distortions, Zoom is great IMHO. Some of their effects are pretty good, some aren't. I like Chorus for instance, do not care for their Phase. Doubling is good, Tremelo is weak. So there are a few good effects and some not-so-good effects. But their distortions are killer.

Zoom's strength is that they are very easy to tweak. You don't have to memorize a 70 page manual to adjust your settings. You could probably figure out how to tweak them without a manual at all. That said, you can not "fine-tune" your settings. For Chorus for instance you get C1 thru C9. You get what they give you, pick your favorite setting. With other brands you can fine tune depth, speed, modulation, etc... So if you really like to dig in and fine tune your pedals the other brands are better. I guess it all depends on the individual. I don't like overly complicated pedals that take forever to fine-tune.

Zoom has cab simulations, these sound good through a little bedroom amp or straight into a mixer board on a PA. Probably sound great into a computer too. They sound terrible through an amp cranked up to gig volumes, I always turned these off to play live. But with Zoom that only takes seconds to do.

Zooms EQ is not too good, I turn these off and use my amp's and EQ pedal settings.

Zoom has lots of fans, you can find sites with hundreds of settings to get your favorite tones for various artists or particular songs. Here is one old site for the 505 II. Some sites have 500 settings or more if you look around.

http://thor.prohosting.com/~benkad/patch.htm

Cubase is a software for recording and editing audio. The G2.1u includes a copy of Cubase LE, a reduced version of the normal product. It is not a "professional version" but it is perfectly operative. I think it is limited the number of tracks and the effects availables. Some people here use it. This is a link to the professional version: http://www.steinberg.net/983_1.html

The G2.1u could be use for playing live. It is a metal case with rubber. It seems robust, strong. The G1 seems a plastic case but I don't know if it is important and if it could be enough for your environment.

I guess you know these pages:

http://www.zoom.co.jp/english/download/demosound/demo_g1series.php
http://www.zoom.co.jp/english/download/demosound/demo_g2series.php

They include demos sounds.

In this prices range, some people also recomends the Digitech. For example:

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/DigiTech-RP250-Multi-Effects-Pedal?sku=156607

Nuno

The electronics is the same.

The clean sounds are good but not great. The overdrive could be great, there are more of them. Some effects are good and some effects are not so good. The best of it, probably, is the great number of effects. In my case, I didn't know how sound some of them, so I've learnt the difference between reverbs, echos, etc. And also the USB connection and the software (a copy of Cubase LE).

The G2's are very robusts but I don't know if the G1's are metal or plastic.

When I bought it (December) I was very happy. Now I've learnt several things and also I can appreciate more the different sounds. And I am just happy and looking for another pedals. Specifically I'm interested on the new Line 6 Pocket Pod, I don't know if it could be for you too. Really I'm looking for a "tube tone" between solid-state devices...

Anyway, if you have a specific question or you want to hear a sound/effect, let me now.
