What exactly is UK Crown Copyright as opposed to standard Copyright?

Anything produced by or on behalf of the Crown - like the Ordnance Survey maps of the UK for example. It will say "Crown Copyright" on it.

Whether they do or not is open to debate - I've never known a venue do so.

Copyright lasts 75 years, except for UK Crown Copyright which lasts 150 - this might be where you're getting 1927 from.

hope this isnt a repeat of stuff already covered  :D,  but here goes:

I read somewhere that songs pre-1927 were not copyrighted, so anyone can use them.
- is this date right?
- is this an international rule or just US?

How does this go for covers? In Brisbane (Oz) where I live, every pub has a cover duo that does the latest pop songs - would they be paying commissions etc?

If I play in a few local cafes, what do I have to do if I throw in a couple of covers?
