I hear tunes in my head all day I actually write down progressions on a scatch sheet of paper thorughout my day at work.. they often sound cool (some replicate famouse songs to an extent, those are the nothin better to do days) I then try and take this and use it with some lyrics I have and nothing comes out i even started hating my composition.

there are two, um, 'methods' that I find I often use.

one is to brainstorm good phrases or individual lines (or just pinch them from conversations with friends.....the amount of times I've stopped mid-point to jot down what I've just said, lol) and then treat these fragments like a piece of a play-script....i.e. what would happen next, what happened before, what perspective is it being told from, etc, etc, to flesh out the piece.

the other is simply sitting down when I'm feeling a certain way, or have something I want to say, and then working it into song form. but this disposition comes and goes, even for the best lyricists, so you shouldn't rely upon it. welcome it when it comes, just make sure you have back up plans, too.

I know you said you didn't like the idea of joining the SSG, but I would advise it. Most writers of any form will give themselves exercises during quiet periods, and it can be anything from writing a piece based on a book/painting/movie you ike, to the sometimes vague SSG titles (like this week's free will vs. determinism topic), to something pretty specific. one idea is to take a bunch of words (like 5 or 6, maybe) then try to write one song where all these words get used. to make it more challenging you can generate the words randomly (e.g. by googling for word-of-the-day programmes, or getting a bunch of friends to choose the words). you don't have to publicly use these exercise-songs, just as you don't have to publicly use the SSG songs, but they're kinda like practising scales - when you do want to say something you'll say it with a stronger vocabulary/better technique, whereas just playing a solo 6 months from now with no scale-work or other practise inbetween isn't a smart idea. and sometimes you will write exercise-songs that turn out really well, or feature bits you can reuse later in your 'public' songs.

at the risk of sounding like a broken record, if you want to perform your own songs regularly (at whatever level) you have to be able to write good songs consistently. just waiting for the creative juices isn't going to cut it, at least not in the long-run. hence the amount of bands/singers who only release one or two albums.

I try and outline what I want to say, then how to say it, and lastly the actual words to use. I'll often have a MIDI with a vocal melody in the background too.

It all helps, but not nearly enough yet... this is more a shout of solidarity than advice ;)

I also cheat - if I still don't like it after 'too long', I'll hand it over to my mate who's better at that kind of thing for him to finish it off
