I tell my daughter, who has just started writing poetry, DO NOT bleed on the page. You're just not good enough. Only the best of the best can write about personal experience and stay objective enough to write well. You're seriously not alone. I could write volumes of personal crap and it would all come off terrible.

My college professor would slam me constantly for writing personal stuff. Show, do not tell, was rule number one and that's nearly impossible when you're writing about lost love.

I suggest writing about an inanimate object and not a rose or a gun or cloudy day since those will drag you back to your girlfriend. Write about a pencil or write about a day at the zoo. You may think, "no way", but just try. I would love to read 50 lines about pencil. could be quite interesting.

Just my opinion.
