Do I need a studio to record the songs?

You have two options: either spend a few bucks on a studio and rent some time there. Or get yourself two mics, a mixer, a soundcard and record it yourself. Assuming you have a soundcard with a basic stereo line-in, the costs for setting up your own personal home-studio will be:

-Audacity recording program (free, shareware)
-Behringer UB802 mixer (E49,-)
-Behringer mic-set (three mics in a case, E29,-)
-Two mic->mixer cables, one mixer->pc cable (E10,-)

Now you can record yourself singing and playing at the same time, sending guitar all the way to the left channel and the singing right, so you can split the stereo track after you've recorded it and add effects or change things to both tracks individually. This is pretty much the cheapest way to get proper results for under E100. Make sure this works very well if it is just one guitar and one singer, but works far less good if you get drums, piano and whatnot. If you do want to add these instruments you're better of recording the guitar/voice first, and then keep adding instruments to prevent having multiple instruments on one track.

Scenario: a demo disk makes its way to Dolly Parton's manager (it's like a who you know, friends sort of network too out there), and he plays her the thing. It's like in speed metal format and as it's playing he's saying, "Yah just imagine the drums were not like that, and there's a steel solo here and then...etc."

It's pretty hard to be doing that while she's listening to the song.

So what they do sometimes is take a song (or songs) they think the artist will like, get their own arranger and studio guys and cut a demo in the style of the artist and THEN present it.

Or, if the song is simple to begin with, they can just play it and the artist herself and start to imagine all the layers and orchestration and whatnot. Without the clutter, it's way easier for them to hear the 'gem.'

No. That's what A&R (Artist & Repertoire) people are for.

And lots of times, they might prefer hearing something simple - the melody, the words and the chords - without all the added production and instrumentation. When the artist finally gets the song, they'll probably not use much of the arrangement or fills or licks or anything else. They would take the song and do it the way they're known for, and sometimes the simplest version makes it easiest to add things to, rather than the other way around.

Simple is better sometimes.

Well, most times.

Just get a good clean recording with minimal effects or anything else so they can hear everything clearly, and then see if you can somehow get in contact with some A&R person. They're hard to get to sometimes - you have to have a music attorney sometimes just to get your stuff heard - but it could work.

Best of luck.

Take care.

I want to start distributing them to artists that might record them, and I think I might be close to establish good connections to people in the business.

But there is something I don't know though ... how should I present my songs?
