Tube all the way! (though I dont know about hyrids)

There are some good hybrids around, and the best of them have done - or tried to do - clever technical things to address this absence of power amp overdrive in the sound. The Vox Valvetronix amps are pretty extraordinary in this respect. (Vox say: "The AD100VT, AD50VT, AD30VT and AD15VT feature our patented VOX Valve Reactor found on all Valvetronix products. The Valve Reactor circuit uses a 12AX7 triode vacuum tube together with an actual low-wattage tube power amp circuit, a virtual output transformer and a dummy speaker circuit that simulates the impedance changes of a real speaker. It also reconfigures itself so that its characteristics are the same as the amps it's modeling (class A, class AB, negative feedback circuit, etc.). This means that all of the nuances of the original amp model including sound, feel, distortion and presence are reproduced accurately.") The Valvetronix "UK '70s" and "UK '80s" models are some of the best Marshall sounds I've heard, apart from the real thing of course ...

I'm no engineer, but these things sound bloomin' awesome, and that's from someone whose main amp for years was a very much old-school tube amp, an AC30TB from around 1966, so I know what valves sound and feel like when they're overdriven 8)

Price? I notice Musician's Friend are doing the AD30VT for $239, and the AD50VT for $359 - so less than the Marshall hybrids anyway. (Here in the UK, around £150 and £200 respectively.) NB - don't be tempted to go for the AD15VT - it lacks the output power level control that, and I quote Vox again, from the manual: "... lets you get that highly desirable, fat, warm sound of the Valvetronix power stage being driven hard (a common trait of all great valve power amps), at various levels." Does just what it says on the box, too!

Anyway, for a proper lead sound try this:

Californian->Hi-gain->US.
Presence/treble/mids/bass: 7/5/7/5
Gain: 5 (important, don't increase sustain by pumping the gain!)
Volumes: whatever you feel like.

Add some compression, reverb en tiny bit of flanging. Final sound depends on your axe so experiment a bit. The tubes in the AVT 'should' make it sound a bit more warmth but the effects are tiny so it really isn't a tube amp in any way, it's basically your GMX with less sonic variety and a marshall logo. I myself would stay away from the MT2, it has quite some trouble with keeping the indivual string's sound from blurring together which becomes very apparant if you mix lead with rhythm playing.

Yeah its great pedal when your playing loud (you dont quite get the chunky depth on the lower volumes) Definately worth getting, but I wouldnt atribute it to producing a Rhoads sound. Tube amps also sound better the louder you go. So its pretty much whole setup that made it sound so great. I guess it would have been the amp however that got the RR sound, even through Rhoads himself played through Marshall tube amps.

All this talk of tubes and Marshalls...My advice is, dont bother getting a Marshall unless it is a tube amp. My friend has a 100watt solid state stack (lol tounge twister) and I think it despiratly lacks quality and tone. Tube all the way! (though I dont know about hyrids)
