I'm not sure why everybody forgets this, but music is notes, which at their most fundamental (sans timbre and ADSR) are pitch and duration. Just as all notes don't have to be the same pitch, they do not have to be the same duration. So get some variation in rhythm (including attack and volume) in there and you will find even a simple ascending or descending scale can sound much less scalar and much more interesting.

Rather than thinking scales, think chords. By that I mean keep track of the 'chord of the moment' by seeing it in all positions at once. It's not an easy task, but once you can do that, you'll be looking at all the strongest melody notes. Once you start thinking melody rather than scales, and you track the chords as they come and go, you'll find a whole new world of playing opening up, one that is perpetually 'context sensitive'.

http://www.thatllteachyou.com/chordtones/ is a lesson I put together demonstrating what I mean.

Kirk

Is there anyone out there with some practice hints that they use to expand their mind (and fingers) and not get locked into the scale itself?

I hope I'm making sense...

Thanks!

Julius
