                        <content:encoded><![CDATA[Anyway, this was just an observation that got me thinking about guitar playing. You will see lots of posts where players complain they can't get any "mojo" or feeling out of their soloing. <br><br>Well, maybe that is not the case whatsoever. Maybe you are playing some great licks that sound pretty awful by themselves, but if you were playing with a live band would sound awesome. <br><br>That's all. But context is everything.

Yup.  I got myself a JamMan looper pedal last summer and it has been a great tool for practicing solos.  Before that the only time I got to hear them in context was when I had my weekly lesson and my instructor would play the rhythm parts.  When you've got the context you can experiment with solos - dynamics, etc.<br><br>As I'm learning to improvise it's been a critical tool.  There is no way I could learn to do it over a metronome click.  Using pre-recorded backing tracks works too - you can get a bigger rhythm section but that can be too distracting when you are working on new stuff and you've got a limited selection.  I've also used the JamMan to work on my rhythm playing - lay down the bass track to practice over with a drum beat (the JamMan has some built in).]]></content:encoded>

                        <content:encoded><![CDATA[absolutely tru Wes.<br>now that I am recording myself and laying tracks.<br>I find my approach to licks to be very different than before.<br>when I played to a backing track I sounded great.<br>then I isolated my playing and wow, what a surprise.<br>thee were lots of finger noises, pre bend groans, finger muffling another string or little buzzes.<br>man what a mess. but also recorded was my tone and phrasing and realness of my playing.<br>still, it was like hearing your voice on a bad phone machine. or worse. your bare naked in public.<br>but when included and mixed into the bass, drums, rhythm guitar. <br>wow. it sounds so very nice.<br>knowing this I now keep my playing more under control. not hampered but more intentional.<br> cleaner, simpler, adepter. <br>it is the little parts that make up the whole.]]></content:encoded>

                        <content:encoded><![CDATA[I recently found these two videos on YouTube while trying to demonstrate the BBE Sonic Stomp pedal I recently purchased. Great pedal, but that is not what this post is about whatsoever. <br><br>Watch this first video. Now, you might come away thinking what I first thought:<br><br>OK, this is a good demonstration of this pedal, but this guy does not really play well at all. He is still basically playing the same type licks, but this time to a backing track.
