I've got a DigiTech JamMan that I really like. It's been a great practice tool. I've used it to lay down rhythm tracks along with one of the built in drum sounds and then practiced my leads or improvisation on top. The JamMan or one of the Boss pedals would make a great practice tool. However, I think that the JamMan has a few plusses over the Boss looper though. The JamMan can be connected to your computer so that you can download WAV files (easy to convert MP3 to that) to it and use those to practice with (songs that you have ripped, audio created with other tools on your computer, etc.) and it can use removable flash memory card so the storage is a lot more than the Boss pedal.
