One of the very first things I was ever told when beginning to play was to just strum. Up and down, down and up, up up down, down down up. First using all of the strings, then strumming only the top three then the bottom three (or four, it's not meant to be precise yet). Don't worry about making a chord. Just strum. Almost mindlessly. And as you strum, listen to the different tones you get. The object is to get yourself comfortable with holding the guitar and strumming. As you mindlessly strum you'll find that you aren't fighting with it as much as you are when you are concentrating, the guitar starts to feel more comfortable in your hands. Once you get comfortable with that, start playing chords and mindlessly strum those for a while. That will also help with making chord changes. If you have to struggle for a minute to make the chord, keep strumming. It helped me, maybe it will help you, too! :D
