I used to perform as singer in a rock band about 15 years ago. The thing is, maybe you already know this, that there is a big difference in a band playing a song.. or just one or two people. You can get away with ALOT of mistakes when playing live with a band.. especially if you are amplified. If you have any control over it then make sure that the audience can hear your singer. People like to sing along with the band and it is hard for them to if they cant hear the singer. Make sure your drummer has volume control. Our biggest complaint use to be that no one could hear over our drummer.

The audience tends to pick our people that are more charasmatic to watch while you are playing. My opinion is that this should be your singer.. but I have seen some guitarist being that person too. Part of being a great singer/performer when live is knowing how to work the crowd.

As far as songs, I prefer Hotel California over Pretty Woman. But then again.. your audience would probly think the opposite. Pretty Woman is a much more danceable song. Not to mention the lyrics give the singer the opporunity to be more flambouant than he could be with Hotel California. Pick songs that you can do.. that you feel your audience would be most interested in. Maybe they will be too shy to get up and dance... but some will kinda sit in their chair and kinda "Chair dance".

But just have fun with it. Some of us, me included, are just a little jealous that you are getting this chance anyways.. LOL But you'll do fine. Breathe and have fun cause if the band is having fun.. chances are that the audience is having fun.

Jim

If it's in advance and I'm lucky they send me a song list or a Cd. If their a cover band chance's are I know the songs already. This is were playing by ear and having confidence in yourself is very useful.

Please remember I've been playing for a long time. Fancy words, I adapt and improvise. Not so fancy words, I just make stuff up and make them think it's part of the song. I give them what they came for and thats the unquestionable sound of a guitar that bring them out their sets to tears in their eye's.

You'll do just fine. Get a song list going. Work in some practice's, don't send anytime worrying or thinking.. Just play.

It's that looking for a great show that day and waking the next day when you had one.

Joe
