Work's suprisingly well, and now I am accually learning how to play to something else. I guess I just need to work on figuring out witch scales go with what chords and whatnot.....

Some will just try to slap scales on you though..watch out for those buggers! $10 for 30 minutes and I get 5 7 tone pentatonics..hmmm..I'm thinking..."Can't I get these off the internet?"
But as I said..I don't think my guitar instructor knows my goals at the moment. I pretty much think that he thinks i just want to play fast. which used to be VERY true, but now it's not at all. so just find an experience guitar instructor, tell him your goals, and work at your own pace.

All of the discussions have a lot of good points. One thing you should keep in mind while taking lessons is to take things slow - if something gels with what you know through practice, then don't be too eager to just run with it. The teacher is there for a reason! :P

Also, if you tell the teacher at the beginning of the lessons what your problems are, what your strengths are, and what direction you want to go in, they'll be able to figure out how to get you to where you want to be. But not without practice! (Which, I take it, you're already good at!)

One thing you would want to keep in mind while you're taking lessons - ask questions about musical theory, and relating scales to rhythm. That'll help you to become a better guitarist, and come up with something that fits instead of "sounding out of place".

Good luck with the lessons!

-Rodya

I've been playing for about 5 years now and I like to think I'm pretty good... at playing other people's music :)

I've been trying to get a grasp on being able to play something overtop of something else. A friend of mine who also plays comes over to my house every once in a while and we try to make up some of our own music. It never goes so well so we just play some metalicca or GNR. I always try to play something to what he plays and I can never do it. It always sounds out of place.

I started at 16 with an old nylon classical. I own 4 guitars now, and I can make up my own licks and (semi) solo's but it never sounds right when I try and do it ontop of anything else

I've never had lessons before and I was thinking about trying it outI was wondering if anyone has any tips on finding the right teacher for you... and what I should expect to pay for it.
