slothrob, what sort of quality issues should i pay specific attention to? fit and finish, like manufacturing defects, or tonal problems, like damaged electronics?
although i suppose it'll probably just be a case of due care and attention to everything

It's a solid body Gretsch!

If it were a hollow body, I would say buy it, steal it, beg for it, whatever it takes; but I've not tried a solid bodied Gretsch.

This guitar, or one similar in setup (not the junior jet.. I have the ability to get a little more coin than that), is one that I just saw and fell in love with. I have never been struck so hard while looking at a guitar. It was hard to not buy it then (well, not really).

However, before commiting, I was wondering if anyone could offer me some advice? what is the "gretsch" sound? how do they compare with stratocasters (i have some experience with those), or les pauls?

I don't really know what to ask.. which I guess could be construed as, what should I ask a salesman/woman at the store?
