Don't think that's really a "metal" guitar given it's a "Santana." Thin can be fixed with combinations of string gauge, pup adjustment, EQ (pedal if you like) and amplification. An EQ might be the best bang for the buck. Are you getting or have you already gotten the Blues Junior? If not, did you try your guitar into one yet? It might take you quite the distance toward a thicker mid-range sound.

I have an AS83, great guitar for the money. First thing I did was strip off the 9's and put 10's on it and it made a world of difference...considering 11's now. Might change pick-ups in the near future. Playing it through an Epiphone Valve Special, sounds good enough to me. I'd love to have an ES-335 (or 336) or a PRS HBII, but until then, this will do nicely.

My first guitar was a Squier Strat, thing still plays great for a $150 guitar. My second was a Schecter C1-Plus, another great guitar for the money. All three are stock except for Gibson Vintage Reissue 11's.

How about an Oscar Schmidt hollowbody? Perhaps even cheaper than the artcore, but just as well made. I have the cheaper Oscar, the OE30, which goes for $150 on Musicians Friend. It's basically just like a Gibson style 335. I've changed the pickups, and it sounds and plays great for many styles. It's versatility is really quite amazing. I use it for eberything from soft jazz(fingerpicking) to hard rock. The only thing is that it has a bolt on neck, which really don't matter for a guitar in this price range, anyway!
