You have a huge advantage over me. I live outside of a small town, population about 300. The closest thing to a city is a hours drive. I met people to play with at church. It's a matter of networking and building relationships. I'll bet there are hundreds of thousands of guitar players in NYC. Just the other day I ran into a guy at the Walmart that plays mandolin in three local Bluegrass bands (I'd seen his picture in the local paper). I told him I'm trying to play the mandolin also but that I was having some difficulty. He invited me to play with him and said he'd show me some things :D If I hadn't brought up the subject I would have missed a great opportunity.

^^^ Yeah, market yourself as a rhythm guitarist. Sometimes how you spin things can be the difference between being called or passed upon. I'm not saying to lie - be honest about your abilities, but don't be afraid to say "solid rhythm guitarist available" if you are a solid rhythm guitarist. I wouldn't worry as much about the recordings. If people aren't willing to jam with you once, they probably aren't worth it. But that's my opinion.

Also, check out open mikes. A lot of those have house bands, and you'll obviously have a good chance of running into other people who want to play. I played with one in college every so often, and poeple would switch up practically every song. And its nice, since you can still play if you don't want to sing.

My little town has three post offices, all with a bulletin board for "community stuff." I printed a flyer with the top line saying "Learning While Jamming." I was hoping to catch the attention of beginner/intermediate players in the area. (Mainly other middle-aged guys who always wanted to be in a garage band. People who now have a garage, but no band yet. ) I mentioned the styles I like, and added a row of those tear-off strips with my name and contact information.
Almost all the contact info strips have disappeared from the one in the P.O. nearest my home, but I've only gotten one call. (And that guy, in a Doors cover band, was looking for a keyboard player.)

Last year, I took beginner and intermediate guitar classes through the local Adult Ed system, and met some good people with similar musical interests. We keep in touch by email, dropping hints about open mic nights and so on.
I also keep in touch with my instructor, and he's given me the names and numbers of a couple of guys in the area who are around my age and skill level. We haven't set a time and place yet, but we will be getting together to jam, maybe at the instructor's studio.

And also last year, there were three guitarists (of varying skill levels) among the construction crew at the job my employer had me on from April to October, including the owner of the company. Sometimes during lunch break, we'd jam a little, although time away from work is way more conducive to that. There is at least one cookout/jam planned for this summer. It's just a matter of getting as many people as possible in the same place at the same time. (Barring complications like work, lawn maintenance and other household chores, etc.)
