If it's only two strings you're playing, you might be playing an octave. Then I'd suggest the first method. If, on the other hard, you're playing a partial chord, hybrid picking might be a better solution (to get that rockabilly solo sound).

...or are the two strings plucked???
I'm just a bit unsure as if it's strummed there is usually an x on the middle string to indicate muting...
