Haha, well, thanks for the advice, actually though I think I didn't word thequestion clearly enough. I'm not doing a solo, I'm doing a solo guitar part by coming up with a chord progression for harmony and a melody line and finding a way to play the two together.

The voice has some obvious limitations as to melody, at least the average person's voice. But what I'm wondering are there any other differences that need to be thought of. When I am playing notes I've strung together into a line over the progression it sounds much more like a guitar melody than a real vocal melody. Are there way to insure you're getting the feel of either one? In a solo guitar raangement should the guitar usually have an easy vocal melody or a guitar melody of it's own?

That way you can create a solo melody that's a suitable contrast to the vocal melody and makes it all work together. And that's about it as far as rules go, methinks.

Best,

A :-)

I've recently asked my teacher about general composition standards. He gave me an excerise to try out to see what works for a solo guitar part. The pecularities aren't important. However, there are a few steps, such as first choosing a harmony and then writing a melody, later finding a way to incorporate both and arranging it. My question is, are there any particar differences between guitar melody parts and standard vocal melody parts?

There is the obvious fact that a human voice may not sing like a guitar can, especially in a fast solo or whatnot. A book I have also has seperate sections for "improvisation over chords" and "melody over chords" (although this just happens to be suggesstions on what modes to use etc.) I'm wondering though, is are there specific rules in regards to writing out a melody you have on your head as apart to what simply sounds good on guitar, and probably wouldn't transfer at all to voice.
