so then how do you do it? are you muting with the picking hand or the fretting hand?

I mute with the fretting hand but I am also NOT really playing "chords". I just alternate between my index and ring fingers:

Repeat 4 times

E:---0--------0----------0-------0------------
B:---0--------0----------0-------0------------
G:---0--------0----------0-------0------------
D:-------------------------------------2---
A:-----------------2---------4--------------
E:--------4--------------------------------

Repeat 2 times

E:---0---------0----------0--------0----------
B:---0---------0----------0--------0----------
G:---0---------0----------0--------0------2----
D:-------------------2--------4-------------
A:---------4-------------------------------
E:----------------------------------------

Instead of fretting the bass notes with the tip of my finger I use the pads. Thant way my finger mutes the treble strings. The "zeros" are all upstrokes. So for a "strumming pattern" use UB UB UB UB (where "U" is upstroke and "B" is bass note).

***Sorry about my tab  ...I never was anygood a post it!***

***EDIT***

HOWEVER...I just re-read your original post and you want to fingerpick this...I am using a pick. I am sure it can be fingerpicked but that is beyond my abilities right now...sorry!

Actually it's easier than it looks. I play a variation of that bassline but I do it a bit differently (And I have only been playing for a little over 10 months). I recorded THIS about 2 1/2 months ago. Granted it's no Stevie Ray but it really is easier than it looks. Yes I did get off time a few times but heck I had only been playing for 7 months!

I actually just played this again today for the first time since the recording and it did take me a bit to get the feel of it again but it came back to me.

With that example you probably need to learn to rest the side of your picking hand on the top three strings only.

Is this asking you to get a palm-mute type sound, or to completely stop the note short?

In Pride and Joy by Stevie Ray Vaughn there is a great example of this. Stevie plays a walking bass line with the top three notes of an open E chord inbetween each bass note. But each note of the walking bass line is quickly muted by Stevie, while the higher chord notes are allowed to ring open. This is a very difficult technique to play correctly. I saw a video of Stevie playing this song. Immediately after playing each bass note he would quickly lay his fretting fingers over all the strings, but quickly return to the fretted E chord. This is hard! It is sort of "bouncing" your hands off the strings.

Anyway, I don't know if this is what your example is looking for. But it might be a way of playing this example.

I bought it because I thought I'd learn some new things and it seemed at a level that I was up to. Trouble is about midway into it it gets hard very fast.

One of the things this book teaches is playing a chord while muting the bassline only. I can mute chords; I know what muting is. No problem there. But this idea of muting only one string while playing the rest of the chord is beyond me. Anyone know how it is done?

The example he is giving is a walking bassline for a G chord. You play and mute the G note on the 6th string, then play the rest of the chord. Then you play and mute the B note on the 5th string and play the rest of the chord. Then you play and mute the open D string and play the rest of the chord, then play and mute the E note on the D string and play the rest of the chord.
