Just thought I'd add an update on this. I now have the guitar back and its perfect. There are 3 guys who work on guitars at the shop, one of which builds from scratch. He looked at my guitar and said that the nut the other guy fitted had a few problems, including a couple of the string guides were filed too deep and that the angle was slightly off, so the strings weren't seated correctly. He fitted a new nut and its cracking now. He also said that at £160 it was an absolute bargain, he even plugged it in to an amp to check that the electrified sound wasn't garbage and he was still impressed.

So, there you go, a nut can make a huge difference to the sound of the guitar, although it might not be due to the material used.

Late last night I was fooling around with the guitar again and decided that the 6th was definitely worse than the others, so I slackened the string off and re-tightened it and there was a loud ping. I guess the string was catching on something. Anyway, the 6th now sounded as good as the other 5, but the whole guitar is still some way less impressive than it was. However, as it was all now consistent I was thinking I'd live with it. The guitar now sounds a bit better than the ultra-cheapie it replaced, but if it had sounded like that in the shop I wouldn't have bought it.

I then put a capo on and blow me the rich, warm, boomy sound was back - now that's why I bought the guitar. So I went back to Frets.com and looked up nuts, then I looked at what's been fitted and finally I compared it to my Taylor. Its obvious now. My Taylor nut is twice as high as it is wide and has a lovely curve on it that the strings follow towards the tuners. The strings stand, say, 3/5mm off of the headstock.

The new nut is practically square, has very little to no curve and the strings stand about 7/10mm off of the headstock.

I am taking it back today, and I have a capo in the bag to demonstrate the different sound. Hopefully it will all be sorted soon.

So, there you go, a bad nut can make a massive difference in sound, as with the Capo on the guitar sounds great (to me) again.

Quick update. I phoned the store and the guy who did the work wasn't there. However, his colleague who set up my first ever acoustic was and he was really sympathetic and told me to get it back there asap and he'll take a look. He said that its possible that there isn't enough break angle. He also said that if I liked the tone before then the guitar should be structurally sound and they should be able to get the tone back. He was excellent actually, which is why I go there.

I am home now and have looked at the guitar and it looks okay to me. I have held the guitar to my chest and all strings except the fat e string seem to vibrate enough for me to feel it, yet the 6th doesn't, to me it just seems a bit dead/dull. I am hoping that its just a duff string or a bad bit of finishing on that end of the bridge/saddle.

The whole guitar is slightly less vibrant tonally than it was, I expected that, but just not as much as this on that one string. Boy am I fussy!

I'll let you know what happens.

I've had the Jumbo set up and re-strung. Its much easier to play but its lost a lot of 'boom' to my ears, especially the open G chord. If I play Good Riddance, or Wonderwall or Talking about a Revolution the 'G' chord just sounds wrong, the rest are okay.

The action was really high before, its perfect now, but to get there the luthier had to cut a new bone nut (old one was plastic) and plain down the bridge and the saddle (some wood shavings were still in the guitar...). He also fitted new strings. I asked him to fit the same gauge as what was on there and he has fitted D'addraio EJ16's, same as on my Taylor. These have a .053 6th. When I bought the guitar I asked for some free strings and was given Snarling Dogs which have a .054 6th - the guy said that these would be 'like whats on there'. I don't know what the guitar had fitted, or even if they were the original fitment, which I also don't know.

I guess that taking the action down would cause a loss in Bass/Boom - correct?
Is it possible I would notice a difference between a .053 and .054 6th?
EJ16's are .012, .016, .024, .032, .042, .053, I notice that EJ19 (Bluegrass) are EJ19 - 12, 16, 25, 35, 45, 56 - If I fitted these would I get some Bass/Boom back?
Any other tips?

I'll call the luthier tomorrow and ask him, but if anyone has any comments I'd appreciate them.

Thanks,

Rich.
