If you have magnetic pickups, you won't get any sound out of the G, B, and E strings - they're entirely nylon... and you <I>may</I> get a tiny bet of sound out of the wound strings (they're usually wound with silver wire, and silver is alloyed with a tiny bit of nickel, copper and tin, which might have a little magnetic interference.<br><br>If you have a piezoelectric pickup - some electrics have one in the bridge - you'll get sound.  Those pickups sense vibration, rather than magnetic interference.]]></content:encoded>

Well, you would hear a bit of sound if your ear was within a foot or so of the strings.<br><br>In order for an electric guitar to work properly the pickups have to create an electrical signal that is sent to the amp. <br><br>That electrical signal is created by a piece of metal moving thru a magnetic field. The pickups provide the magnetic field, and a coil of wire to collect the electrical signal. The piece of moving metal is the guitar string.<br><br>If you make the string of a non-metal then there can be no signal generated, and hence no sound.]]></content:encoded>
