You've got it right, bst... upstrokes on the treble strings to get that 'chop' feeling to the chords. I use alternate picking for the bass notes, but that's just my preference, I guess - as long as you get the same volume and tone, the picking for the bass notes doesn't matter so much. In strict alternate picking, you've only got one downstroke for the chord in each pattern

Here's how I do it, marked with strokes:

D U D U D U D U D U D U D U D U
---0-------0---0---0-------0-2-0-
---0-------0---0---0-------0-2-0-
---1-------1---1---1-------1-2-1-
-----------------2---------------
---------2---4-----------2-------
-0---3-4-------------3-4---------

The advantage I find in doing it that way is that I alternate pick the lead breaks, so my right hand is pretty much doing the same motion all the way through the tune.

If you find the fingering too much of a stretch, just mute the 3rd string and play the whole thing in 2nd position. SRV had great tone and feel, but he wasn't a very precise player, so you can get away with a bit of 'slop' covering most of his stuff :)

I can get close to that with this technique. It does get annoying when i dont do it right but i think this is how he does it (from my SRV dvd). It takes some practice. You can also just leave the upstrokes inbetween the notes out and just play shuffle type thing.

I think the real trick is playing in a lazy way (like behind the beat) to make it sound good. I do this sometimes (sometimes on accident, sometimes i try to) and i think thats the way to do it.

Can anyone help me with any wrist techniques, it sounds like he is doing all upstrokes and in between a downstroke on a single note. Is this right?
