I use both types of power amps tube and solid-state. I create the sound and tone I need with the tube preamps and power amps, then from the attenuators I use either tube or solid-state power amps to amplify that sound and tone.

I have a laptop setting on top of the rack case's for adjusting the preamps, I also have mp3's on there and can play along with them. Mixed just right and I blend right into the mix. Which I jam to may heart content.
Over the years I've built and have had companies build speaker cabinets for me. I've also tried using different materials and this and that, which I picked up from places like Parts Express. A few years back I had Anvil build me 2, 2x12 cabinets to match the Anvil Forge II Rack Mount case's, cost 400.00 each without speakers. Four Celestion G12m-70 speakers another 130.00 each new. Of course they look and sound great.

About a two months ago I came to the conclusion that carrying Marshall 4x12 or the Anvil 2x12 cabinets was more work than I wanted to do for just playing a gig or two with the local bands and doing benefits, being I didn't have payed stage hands huffing equipment. I decided to build some single 12" cabinets that would be light to carry and give me the performance I love from my overdriven rack mounted tube amps wrestling with the speakers.

What I did was take the dimensions of the Mesa-Boogie 1x12 Thiele speaker cabinet, drew my plans on printer paper, then went to my local lumber supply store and had them cut the plywood to size from the plans. Took the materials home then with a cordless screw gun and wood glue built the cabinets. I ordered the handles, rubber feet, jack plates, steel grills, and corners from Steelsound.com and other parts can be obtained from Parts Express.com. The speakers of course G12m-70's I won on e-bay.

It took me about an hour to assemble each box. To get creative on covering them. believe it or not I used Automotive under coating I purchased at the local auto parts store for 1.50 a can. The cost was around this, 3/4" Plywood cut ready to assemble around 70.00, accessories around 30.00, 4 celestions from e-bay less than 100.00. Now I have four single 1x12 cabinets that can be carried and used for any number of speaker combinations.

I built the cabinets and filled in any gaps with silicon caulk then sprayed a thin coat of undercoating on it, left it to dry while I built the next one. By the time I was done the cabinets had four thin coats on them. I waited about a week to install the accessories and speakers. They're light to carry and built to get banged around, if need be I can touch them up if they get marked up from road use.

Just offering an Idea that I used. GUIDELINES FOR CABINET DESIGN

Joe

I was wondering what that black coating is you get around most amps. is it a product i can get of the shelf ? I'd prefer that to just spray painting it. what do you guys think ?

also I'm not sure if I should get guitar speakers or normal speakers to put inside. i only have a combo amp which i figured could be hooked up to a "normal" amp and then connected to the cabinet. Would that work ? I really like the sound of my amp it just doesn't have enough punch - hence this experiment :D

what would you guys recommend when getting the speakers ( output size .. anything else you can think of ) l figure i could get about 4 10 inch speakers fitted.

Thanks a whole heap
Minus Human
