I've played a couple of 'open mic' nites before - but recently relocated - now I 've found another and decided I want to do the songs better - so I've been trying to rehearse with the metronome. Now, some questions about this:

1) the trouble is finding the right tempo - do I use what the artist did in the studio - or what they do live - or what tempo I like best?

eg Steal my kisses from Ben Harper I clocked at 100bpm on live at mars, but is slower on the original recording....I like doing it at 96...

2) I've found some songs hard to keep the right tempo to - or if I do, they're sounding dull - which made me wonder if some songs actually change tempo?

would some performers do this live, to add some variation?
OR, are they perhaps anticipating chord changes or something?

eg, does "50 ways to leave your lover" by Paul Simon change tempo for the chorus?? or is it just the musical arrangement?

Jack Johnson's "bubbletoes" change tempo between intro and main song?
