The first is by using the thumb for the F# note....

D - xx0232
D/F# - 200232 using the thumb on the bottom E string.
G - 320003

The second way involves playing the bass note on the D string....

The way I'd play this is to put a mini-barre across the top three strings with my first finger, play the D note on the B string with my 2nd finger, and the F# note on the D string with my pinky.

Are you talking about the introduction / beginning part of the verses? I've not played this in ages (and speaking of age, going by memory isn't the smartest thing for me lately it seems), but I seem to remember that last D as being an A, like this:
