                        <content:encoded><![CDATA[I just finished modding an AXL(also makes Johnsons) strat copy with single coil-sized EMG-copy "low noise"(humbuckers) to fit a Fender pickguard with two Fender singles and a SD humbucker.  All I can say is - big difference!  Just go for it, the routing that I had to do was actually done with a dremel using a wall board cutting attachment, it wasn't that difficult.  Just go slow, hand-fit things over and over again, until you are satisfied that you know how everything is going to fit together.  Make sure that you upgrade the pots and the switch when you do it, the electronics on Johnsons and AXLs are pretty cheap.]]></content:encoded>

He swears by single coils and won't use anything but. Me, I have a Duncan Seymour humbucker at the neck and DiMarzio at the bridge. <br><br>Check out DiMarzio. They have humbuckers that fit a single coil slot. I love mine, it kicks the you know what out of the Seymour Duncan. From my perception, it adds a lot in the way of thickness and depth to the sound.  For me, this is ideal, I love humbucker equipped guitars, for many, that's not what they're seeking from the strat.  They want it set up for those piercing treblely stabs often associated with funk music, or they want the single coil lead sound.<br><br>While I do dive into funk from time to time, My preference would be to install the humbucker and then use a coil tap switch to get some of that "squawk" when I needed it.  <br><br>Ultimately, it's an issue of taste, a humbucker is not "better" than a single coil, nor is the single coil superior, just different strokes for different folks.]]></content:encoded>
