Perhaps the Gretsch has a special design, or cosmetics unique to Gretsch? So, I hope it lasts for you, and you find the problem elsewhere.

Edit: I always put Teflon Micro-Oiler lubricant, or PTFE from the SOURCE into every switch, and pots as soon as I get at 'em. There is nothing that says you can, or you can't. But it works for me, and I "just do it". Yes, the PRS was under warranty, but it was so much easier and cheaper to replace it myself then go over there, drop it off, go back over to pick it up. The 3-Way toggles from Guitar Fetish are do just fine. I actually like this one better than the stock. The stock gold colored chrome did not have a gold-chrome post. Just plain chrome.

I thought my toggle on the Gretsch might be exiting history too, but I now thing it might be the cable input connecter.
