Get the plastic nut and saddle replaced with bone, micarta or corian. Make sure the saddle is intonated properly. If you like you could get the nut replaced with an Earvana nut for super precise intonation.

Forget about replacing the nut if your guitar comes with the Buzz Feiten tuning system.

I have been considering purchasing my first acoustic for some time now. From everything I read, I should request that the music shop "set up" the guitar prior to my taking it home. I also understand that the action should be set between certain measurements.

I guess my question is, within the range of normal action for an acoustic, what is the optimal number or measurement for a beginner? Do I have to specify a certain measurement to the repair person? Or will he or she simiply know, "oh, this newbie needs the guitar set up for a beginner." Is there some "classic" setup for a beginner?

If your reply is along the lines of, "well, what sound do you prefer?", I'm sadly afraid that your help will be lost on me, since I'm such a total beginner, my answer would likely be "the sound of a halfway competent guitarist."

Lastly, what else should I ask for during an initial setup, if anything? Some people suggest having plastic replaced with bone or ebony, etc. Any thoughts on those issues would be greatly appreciated. What would the initial setup generally cost in U.S. dollars (no offense to my U.K. friends; I'm being lazy and don't feel like converting in my head)? Please make your replies on the level of a firstgrader, because I can barely comprehend much on a technical level. :D

Many thanks,
Lawdude
