It sounds as if you probably went to a lighter guage, as 09's were not a 1957 thing, plus you mention possible nut slot buzzing (yes, maybe on open strings). So two other things might exacerbate buzzing: Less tension in lighter strings may reduce the neck relief, maybe even creating "negative relief." (Did the action get even lower?) The second is that lighter gauges' lower tension mean the amplitude of the vibration (side-to-side vibrational displacement) will be larger for the same energy imparted to the string during picking -- translation: you can't pick as hard with lighter gauges -- they will be more likely to "swing wide" and slap the frets.

In general, really low, buzz-free action is more easily achieved with heavier gauge strings. That's why those jazzers are able to play with those huge killer gauges.

Speaking of buzzing... I recently bought a used Washburn WI66 that had super sick low action when I received it. The strings were from 1957 so I decided to un-string the guitar, thoroughly clean it (it needed it) and re-string with a fresh set o f.09s. Now, there appears to be some buzzing on the low E and A strings... any ideas? Could it be that the nut was cut for heavier gauge and now the string is bouncing around?
