If the neck is flat it could be causing the strings to hit adjacent frets so check the relief. Fret a string at the 1st and 14th frets and measure the gap between the bottom of the string and the top of the 6th fret. Should be 10 to 15 thousandths.

2) The action could be low. Without fretting any strings measure the gap between the bottom of the string and the top of the 12th fret.Reasonable range for an acoustic is 4/64" (1.59 mm) on the treble side and 6/64" (2.38 mm) on the bass side.

3) High frets. Intonation is pretty good and there are no other spots any place else on the neck. It sounds like poo (very bad rattle sound).

Any suggestions on what I can do? The guitar isn't really worth an expensive fix, so I'm hoping there is something I can do myself. It's an AJ-1, BTW.

Thanks.

Jason
