Thanks Demo. I am trying to compose a few instrumentals with a Steve Vai and Joe Satriani vibe to them. So to stay in tune is sort of a must. What did you mean by "giving the bar a yank"? Did you mean instead of going down with the bar, you pulled it backwards? Does this make the strings go back to the normal tuned position or something? I can see the strings would stretch while doing the dive, however do the strings stretch back when "giving the bar a yank"?
I took a listen to the links you have listed. VERY NICE. I have to say I am diverse in my musical choices, however, I never expierienced ISLAND FLARE before. Good Job! Keep rockin! 8)

Hey, thanks for the kind words about our stuff! We're doing the traditional stuff now because it seems that nobody does it - or even remembers it - in the Islands themselves. That's a pity, really, to have something die out.

Well, if we're the only ones, then so be it :)

Anyhow, yes, what I mean about the vibrato bar, is after I'd do a bunch of dives where you're pushing the bar pretty much into the pickguard, afterwards, I'd just give it a little tug outward, away from the pickguard, before I went back to playing chords and whatnot. I think maybe the vibrato and the nut and everything were pretty much broken in and things didn't get caught anywhere. That's what I've heard about Strats in other places; some of them just snap back into tune no matter what, and some of them never come back to pitch.

Making sure the nut slots are smoothly finished and lubed (I use pencil graphite) and having the vibrato/trem broken in, so to speak, is essential, but also make sure the strings are properly stretched out beforehand. Like when I was gigging, I'd change strings maybe every other week, and when I did it would be a day or two before I actually had to play. Everything got aclimated. It's just learning to live with a Strat -- that's the main thing. They've got a lot of quirks but when you get used to them, you find they can do things that just about no other guitar can do. I have a Les Paul as well, and it has different quirks, but by and large a Strat will keep testing you and you...you just have to learn to live with it.

Like having a cat.

For your stuff it might be better to eventually get a Floyd though. And a locking nut. I've always wanted to try one of those because I have my Strat set up so the vibrato is 50/50 or so -- where the travel is halfway down and halfway up; the block is normally in the middle of that slot that's cut in there. I was never able to bomb it to the point where the strings were totally loose on the fretboard and sticking to the pickups, though it was pretty close. I guess you'd need a floating trem for that. But it worked out pretty well.

Anyhow, thanks again for the compliments on our music.

Take care. :)

In my recent adventures of playing the guitar I have been learning how to do Dive Bombs. It is fun, however, everytime I have been doing them I am going out of tune. Now, from what I have heard in the past, you can pretty much do any kind of dive, bend, so on and so on on a Floyd Rose and still remain in tune. I think I have figured out how the actual "floating tremelo" works. (Your advise would be appreciated if I am correct or not correct on how this setup works). When bending the wammie bar or what have you on my ESP KH-202 the three springs on the back compress and decompress and make that great sound. I noticed that I am currently able to add two extra springs in the back. I can not help but think that by adding another spring in the back it would take less tension off the other three springs and cure my "out of tune blues". Is my assumption correct? I appreciate the advise. By the way: This sight is the greatest. It has it ALL! Thanks Again!

In a way, you're correct. I found out that you should make sure everything is done correctly (for example, if you have a setup done make sure they didn't screw it up and make sure that the nut is slotted correctly). try lubricating every point of contact of the string (so that would be the string slot in bridge, string saddles, nut, string trees, etc.). I even put fender bullets into my guitar, they make it harder for the string to move around in the bridge. I was able to do the craziest bends, vibratos and even dive bombs and the guitar was able to stay in tune for a little while, I didn't even need to put extra springs on (right now there is 3 on the guitar).

I've found that after severe divebombs I just give the bar a yank (sounds cool too), and it sorta comes back pretty close. In another thread I mentioned that part of being a Strat player is that you're never really all that in tune. In the old days, when I was still performing live, I'd leave the really crazy 'don't care if a break a string' stuff till the last song of the set. It was usually an encore situation so people kinda expected something beyond the beyond, and they never seemed to mind, in the heat of the moment, that the guitar was a little off when the crazyness was over with.

Still, it would've been neat to have a Rose. Just couldn't afford it back then. :)

Take care.

I know strings go out of tune eventually with the Floyd Rose system, but it just gets to be a slight bumber when you know you can give it some abuse but it won't take it like you imagined. I have to say I can not go any other way now that I have the Floyd Rose on my guitar. It is a pain when you put new strings on, because of the constant adjustments on the top and bottom, but when its locked in its in tune for weeks (until I start those long drops on the whammy)
Hey that Ibanez you have is a pretty sharp guitar. I am currently looking into a RG1570 myself. Thanks Again!
