If you ever want to sell the guitar in the future you'd better put something on it that can be removed. The stuff I do is permanent, since I poly or lacquer over the images.

Simply put, the best material is a beer label. Check it out!

I also think a great way to customize your guitar (if it is a Strat or Tele) is to update the pickguard. It is removable and doesn't hurt the guitar at all. You can do literally anything you want to a pickguard.

No offense to the guitar purists, be there is no damage to guitars at all if you use waterslide decals. They are completely harmless and though they will last for years they are easily removed if you just lay a wet sponge on the decal, let it sit and then scrape off with the edge of a credit card.... No Damage.

You can get some pretty sweet vintage pinup decals on ebay. I use this seller as they have a pretty good variety:
http://stores.ebay.com/Natures-Miracle-Minerals

They have some pretty cool pics of past customer's jobs you can check out:
http://stores.ebay.com/Natures-Miracle-Minerals/Susans-Wall-of-Fame-2.html

I had some custom work done for a rather well known customer and it turned out pretty well. (sorry, can't post the pics). But they also carry the two images that Gibson is using to reproduce Steve Jones' Gibson Les Paul:
http://cgi.ebay.com/Ukulele-Cowgirl-PinUp-Record-Girl-Guitar-Decal-23_W0QQitemZ250265826377QQihZ015QQcategoryZ7266QQtcZphotoQQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp1742.m153.l1262

Prices are down right reasonable.

OK ... that SG was making famous music when Angus Young was wearing that school boy outfit the first time around for real. That SG was used to invent heavy metal as it was used on .... Iron Man among other songs since it belongs to Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath.

The girly sticker Les Paul belongs to Steve Jones ...... ever heard of the Sex Pistols?

The Mighty Mouse Les Paul belongs to the guy in the pic, the one who designed all the RockMan equipment behind him. He is also the mastermind and guitarist in a band known as Boston. His name is Tom Sholz.

Has nothing to do with putting a sticker on your guitar but I thought is would be fun.

Well, it kind of does. They all have enough bucks that they don't care if putting a sticker on the guitar (particularly a vintage guitar) would drop the value. Average schmoes have to worry about that unless they plan to keep the guitar for life and might never want to change. There is some point (different for all of us) where we wouldn't mind if it lost some value.

In fact, for those you've shown the fact that they've owned it and put a sticker on it may actually raise the value. Nobody's going to pay more for a '59 Les Paul sunburst that I put a "Nuke the Gay Baby Whales for Jesus" sticker on. Probably drop the value a whole lot and even if I could get it off it would have damaged the surface and reduced the value. Now if it was Ted Nugent's guitar with that sticker there are people who would pay more than a "regular" '59 LP.
