Some people call that an 'S' bend or S curve. It's like Paul and Izabella said -- it's a slight twist along the length of the neck. I don't know if your guitar has a truss rod in the neck, but even if it did, it wouldn't help with an S curve because it's just supposed to adjust the curvature of the neck from one end to the other. With an S bend, the frets have to be removed and the fretboard has to be planed nice an even, and then it has to be refretted. It's sort of a big job and yes, planing the fretboard would have a slight effect on the sound -- maybe permanently, maybe just for awhile. I have a '75 lefty Les Paul Custom that has a slight S right where the fretboard comes over the body and the result is, the high E and B buzz a little, whereas the other four strings don't. That's the problem; you can get a pretty low action, but you have to keep the buzzing side higher than you normally would.

I've priced a refret that includes a fretboard plane and it's about $200, but...I really don't want to mess with the guitar's mojo if you know what I mean. Over the years I've learned where it buzzes, and just work around that area.

Depending on the value of your guitar, a plane and refret might or might not be worthwhile, though if it's a beginner guitar and your friend'll do it for free, then maybe go for it.

The tinniness you're experiencing is probably due to the new nut and the fretjob on that one fret. Anytime you shave metal or wood, it'll change the sound of the guitar slightly; but maybe not enough to really make a big deal out of it.

But stripping the guitar's finish off and then redoing it completely -- yes, that would definitely change the sound of it; especially with the soundboard.

Hope this helps a little.

Take care

I have a small accoustic that was given to me by a guy who customizes guitars (so I have no idea what it might have been to begin with). But it was great for me to start learning on. He took it back, because he wanted to replace the plastic nut with bone, fix teh first fret, and "re-shoot" it (I'm assuming, since he sanded the whole thing down, he meant re-finish it). When he brought it back he was despondent, and said that it turned out the neck was twisted. So he's given it back to me for a week to play with, to let the new strings settle, and then he's going to do some more work on it. Now, my question is this: What exactly does the guitar having a twisted neck mean (since it looks straight to me), and what affect will that have on the sound? All I know is that now it sounds a lot tinnier (forgive me for my lack of terminology) than before he worked on it.
