OK..

You guys STOP!!! Behave or go sit down in the corner... Shame on you!!

Mark, 1st off.. Welcome to Guitar Noise. Mark they're messing with you. With the best intentions I'm sure.

Second... Realize this, its extremely difficult to effectively describe the noise or sounds your describing in TEXT. Its better if you had a short recording of what your talking about or a snippet from a song for the kind of effect you seek. Then if we can "HEAR" what your talking about we may be able to help out. If not... I'd suggest you find an instructor if you don't have one, or go into a reputable music store, show them and ask questions... again its very hard for us to understand what it is your asking.

K... back to watching the SeaHawks punish the Panthers. :P

Back in '37 I saw a guy in Walters Hot Jass Orchestra using the bottom part one of these:

Obviously you take the stick off because you can use it either as a Hawaiian slide or stick it under the strings near the bridge. This guy though (the Artist Previously Known as Walt Bigsby - who was a nephew of Walt Disney), had cut the plunger stick into little disks which were placed under the strings (he had a really old 1916 Telcaster, because, well, you didn't make a lot of money back in those days), and they lifted the strings up a bit and gave a nice decay. It would ramp right down to nothing. In fact, a little aside, this impressed a guy in one of the audiences in the Cow Palace so much, that he went out and later created his own lines of banjos!

But this one guy used the rubber part of the plunger like the horn guys did, muting it, creating that wah sound. The lip of the rubber on the strings muted the strings even further, giving it the 'rubbery' sound so adored back in the 30s to 40s.

Then the War came along and all rubber had to go to the defense industry, so they came up with electronic mutes because, believe it or not, lead solder couldn't be used for tires.

And so the Jassmaster came along (predates the Jaguar and Strat), and...the surf came up on the North Shore and the rest is history. :)
