I called him the next day and he said to bring it over, which I did. He dropped what he was doing and went over some things with me. He set the string heights to Fender specs and then adjusted the relief with the truss rod to make the neck almost perfectly straight. I am a little (read a lot) ignorant here, but he said that most necks have some bow in them and by making the neck straight, it really lowered the action.

Jim

I had a look around while I was there and they have some different brands than the usual guitar store. Well, at least the ones that I have been in.
yes -- something is not quite right then. How is the neck relief (forward bow)? As Wes's instructions state, neck relief should adjusted first, and at the most there should be only a slight forward bow. More will affect action and setup. Tightening the truss rod will counteract the forward bow. To check for relief, fret the low E at 1st and 14th and compare the string (straight) to the curve of the neck. Excessive relief will be obvious as large gaps between any of the middle-ish frets and the depressed string.

I'll have to recheck the gap. The problem is that since I tried lowering the strings, I think I have everything out of whack as it sits right now. I was not able to get the truss rod to budge, but by eyeballing the neck it seems to be pretty straight, with a possible slight underbow.

Jim

If the neck seems straight, don't adjust it. Maybe you can post a pic of your bridge set-up as it is now?

The closeness to the body is detemined by the heights of the two pivot posts. Adjust one or both of those and you should be able to get to where you need. You'll probably get it before having to take it in to a tech.

Thanks again, Greg. The two pivot point screws are as tight as they can be. If I loosen then, won't that raise the bridge and thusly the action?

Jim
