I think I have it pretty much where I want it now. Before, I was having to bring the claws in all the way to get the bridge flush, and now I am able to loosen them up and still get the bridge pretty snug to the body. Thanks for the crash course on this job guys. I'm ready to start "setting up" guitars for pay

An American Standard set up for major whammy bar usage, both ways, up and down, without all the lubes that SRV used, because so far, so good, no tuning issues. Doesn't need all that grease as used by SRV's tech, or left-side trem, or the magic oiled ball of cotton at the bottom of the threads of the whammy bar, to help you or your tech pull out broken stubs. I put on the stacks of US pennies to show the measurements or tolerances, makes cents.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y177/bluesdlx/moved/100_0706.jpg
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y177/bluesdlx/moved/100_0703.jpg
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y177/bluesdlx/moved/100_0695.jpg

Movin' on to Hendrix, I built this thing from a MIM, earlier than yours, so it has the little sustain block only. But she's cranked down tight, yet uses only 3 springs ...... sooo, I can pull both ways, although you'll never slide a piece of paper under the tail of this one. It can pull up, even though it's a lefty and closer to the player, and it pivots on its own tail, with a bit of slack in the front 6 screws, which there is no precedent for, meaning the backwards pull on the rounded rear end. Except that little slack should be there in the front screws, like the guys said.

Don't scratch your head too much over strange pickup stagger. Cam Atkinson built those in CANADA eh?, plenty strong, don't need extra bass or trebles, reversed the mids, to do the Star Spangled banner w/tone and pick with your teeth? :?:
The strings are Fender Bullets BTW to pull and/or loosen/slip & slide with a straight trajectory, to be hittin' target notes.
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y177/bluesdlx/moved/100_0595.jpg
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y177/bluesdlx/moved/100_0603.jpg

If that causes problems or doesn't work, you just slap one of these on and a Mojo Angel comes down to be with 'ya.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y177/bluesdlx/moved/100_0605.jpg

Happy tremolo-setting, and may the force sustain you.

I have it set at what I believe is flush to the body, but there is just the slightest bit of ability to raise pitch with the bar still. Do I probably still need to tighten up on the claws? I was thinking that I should have just a hint of flex the other way for string bending, but I really like the idea of losing the tuning woes with the flush bridge

I've heard that blocking it does...but honestly not something I've noticed even on a friend's high end strat with the trem blocked. Still sounds and sustains...just like a strat. (which is great! I'm just saying that blocking made no difference I can detect.)

Setting the bridge to stop floating, though, has another bonus. You should see considerably more stability in tuning.

Unless you really like bending up with the whammy bar, I'd set it flush for that reason alone- any bonus in sustain is a bonus.

Best,
Ande
