Use of compressors can also cause this on the older, simpler guitars.

If the pole pices are removable screws, sometimes they are, sometimes they aren't, you can back them right out and remove, use a syringe to inject the correct mixture of hot wax solution, cure for 24 hours, and screw the poles back in, cleaning off the excess wax. That stops the sound waves from traveling down the threads inside the bobbins, through the windings, and to the magnets of the pickups at least.

I don't play metal or anything with this guitar ( nor do I play metal at all)..but If you've ever listened to social distortion, their guitarist/leader Mike Ness overdrives the hell out of his old 55 goldtop, and it sounds great..and I can get the same sound with these pickups.
I know most people would just play this guitar around home on low volume, but to me I couldn't stand not using this guitar live.

Hey guys I have a 1965 Harmony H-19 Silhouette. Kick *ss guitar, but a real squealer when I put it on overdrive. I love playing punk as much as jazz ( I know I'm wierd  ) and this guitar has a great punk sound ( P-90ish, but better ), but it just squeals it's head off when you crank it. I know what wax potting is, and how to do it. The only thing thats holding me back is the fact that when they built these guitars back then, they riveted the pickups to a baseplate, and the baseplate to the pickguard. I'm a little afraid to tackle this because its such an old guitar. Should I take it somewhere to get it wax potted? How much might that cost? Thanks.

Greatest guitar ever btw.
