Thanks Taso for the "don't think the note choices sounded "bad", they sounded different maybe".
As you say, good improvisation on a song is based on very good knowledge of the song and playing it many times.
And in this case I have not heard Gary Moores original song, only the backing track and the Power Tab Midi file from where I learned the main solo sequence. The recording was taken after less than 10 times playing or listning to the backing track or midi file.
The note choice in the improvised parts is "split of a second decisions" that I can´t explain the basis of. In a way I can only say that I probably unconsciously tried to follow the bass guitar or the way the chord changes was going.
The more I play this song, my note choice is getting more and more predictive and precise, but probably more boring.
Even if I can hit a note with fairly good timing ( on slow song as this one) I find that I have problems with adding the right "flavor" to a single note or a note sequence by selecting vibrato, slides, bendings, hammer on/pull offs or combinations of them. I have learned some basic blues licks but I have problems to use them in a good sounding way in songs.
Do you have any tips on how to learning this.
I am trying to copy guitar solos that I like and the same time understand why I think they sounds good to me,but is not always easy.

Classical musicians know what notes belong where, inside and out, but the first time they improvise, it won't sound that good. It takes practice, and over time one's hearing improves. I don't think the note choices sounded "bad", they sounded different maybe, different than what I was used to. Reminds me a bit of Trey Anastasio, he'll play unexpected notes that can sometimes send shivers down your spine.

It's important that when you bend, you bend correctly, otherwise you'll bend out of key.

One big suggestion I need to make : Work on doing some vibrato. I couldn't hear it in your playing, but that adds a lot to a solo, and I mean a LOT. One reason why Clapton is considered so great is his vibrato is incredible.

Other than that, great job. You have good ideas, and good feeling. You did a good job of putting the right notes in the right spots. The vibrato will really add to the feeling and emotion of the solo.

Nice work, especially for a first 'try'

Taso
